What Good Is Sitting Alone in Your Room?
Trust us - in middle England, there isn't much else to do. You're either sitting alone in your room or kicking back pints at the pub. Don't believe us? Check out Hot Fuzz on DVD. Seriously - the movie is filmed in a fairly local village... Anyway, we were happy to find another 1/2 term break upon us - just in time to prevent a Cotswold version of The Shining (but with less snow). We immediately jumped a train for the nearest major city (London) and some serious cultural:
and retail therapy:
Harrods proved to be a match for even the most seasoned shopper (we managed to get out of there with 5 mLs of peach schnapps and some Turkish delight- anything else and it would have required mortgaging a kidney) so we moved on to other shopping venues:
Eager to fulfill a shopping fantasy Kim has had since childhood, Portabello Road was true to what Angela Lansbury said, anything and everything a chap can unload can be found here. It's a fantastic haven for antiques and junk.
From phrenology heads (no, Jesse didn't buy it, despite his apparent Ph.D in the subject):
To things more Kim's angle (although she STILL didn't find any Wellies!):
Sadly - not EVERYTHING could be found here. Despite her best efforts, Kim just couldn't find any bedknobs, but she was willing to settle with some brass doorknobs:
One tactical error during our most recent city adventure included a trip to the British Museum of Natural History...
We're pretty sure dinosaurs were in there somewhere, but the screaming hoards of 7-year olds on 1/2 term break got the best of us, and we fled for our lives - but not before learning that someone else has tapped into the "Hungry Bunny" theory of ecology - with REAL rabbits (shout out to anyone who's survived Bio 9 w/K-rach, you know what we're talking about!):
Moving on to safer venues (i.e. "too boring for little kids") we checked out Royal Observatory:
And of course - the PRIME MERIDIAN OF THE WORLD (that's what the sign says...)
Of course, had to to the obligatory "one foot in the eastern hemisphere, on in the west" photo.
..
We look forward to sharing our next adventure with you all - no matter what hemisphere we're in!
